Getting Started in ATLAS

The purpose of this page is help you get started in ATLAS. Where appropriate, information here is meant to supplement the ATLAS web site and Workbook. You should read the workbook and also check this page for specific information to follow.

Most of the information you will need is already in the Workbook. There is not much you can do until you receive your CERN account (estimated time: 2 working days) so this should be done first. Here are the steps you need to do to register and change your personal information.

Grid Certificate

In order to run your jobs on the grid, you will need to obtain a grid certificate. You can do this as soon as you get your CERN computer account.

Setup a Computer

You will also need to setup a computer unless it was already done for you or it is part of a group cluster. ATLAS jobs should be run on the grid where jobs will be automatically submitted to where the data is accessible on the storage elements (ie, the jobs go to the data); however there are times when you will need to debug or to test an executable before submitting it on the grid. Note that you will have access to the CERN cluster once registration is completed; so that is also a platform you can use for testing.

There are several components that need to be installed (eg. gLite, Kerberos access to CVS, DQ2) in addition to the ATLAS software which is distributed in the form of Pacman kits.

All this is described in the link above.

Getting an atcanpc account

This is a loose cluster of desktops available at CERN for ATLAS Canada users; These are located in front of the ATLAS Canada offices in building 40 on assigned desks for visitors. Before you request an account, you should already have an lxplus / lxplus5 account.

To request an account, please send an email, from your CERN or Canadian home institution email account, to Include in your mail:

  • Your full name
  • Instutution
  • lxplus login name (the login name for atcanpc will be the same).

To login to these desktops, you have to first login to lxplus / lxplus5 and then do an ssh to one of these PCs: (atcanpc001 to atcanpc004).

Running Workbook Examples

While the examples in the workbook should work; you may encounter problems and want to work with a newer release. In this case, the instructions in this section may be of use.
